Plenty of Parentheses

This post comes in association with my earlier Great Grad Ball post, where I featured the beautiful blue dress I squeezed my body into for my university graduation ball. Although not technically festival-themed, much of the night involved outside entertainment and with the Great Gatsby theme, it was all about grandeur.

As I stated in my first post, the dress itself was so much of a statement that I wanted to keep my make up mostly minimal. But I also like adding a little bit of quirk to my outfits, to really separate social events from one another. I had already acquired some synthetic hair extensions to change my visual appearance slightly but it was grad ball - no holding back! It was however quite by accident that I happened upon the glittery eyes idea. Two nights prior to my graduation ball, I attended a local dance show and took an issue of Company Magazine along with me because I had been told the auditorium got very, very hot. (What I had not been told was how much my legs would stick to the chairs. Tasty.)

When it came to the interval, I had a quick flick through even though I'd already read it cover to cover and the page on festival make up quite literally caught my eye. I spotted the Aztec eye make up, the cogs started whirring and I was suddenly racking my brains trying to remember if I still owned enough glitter to make an Aztec-style adaptation work. Thankfully, I did.

I prepped by just gently curling my eyelashes. I don't tend to do this normally but because it was a big event, I wanted long, full lashes. I then applied my Maybelline Mega Plush mascara which I absolutely love - best mascara I have owned in a while. I do tend to top of up with one or two older mascaras but this one by Maybelline made up most of the impact.

After that I used a handful of cotton buds to gently apply the glitter beneath my lower lashes. Take care not to let the glitter touch your eye ball, which is why I found the cotton buds gave a more accurate application than say using my fingers. I  originally thought I was going to need to use Vaseline or some sort of serum to get the glitter to stick, but it took to my face fine without it. I tried to get the glitter as level as possible, ensuring no gaps could be seen. I opted not to take the glitter right to the corner of my eye but there are plenty of possibilities in how you apply it.

I finally added a flick of liquid eyeliner - the one used here is very near its end so isn't as smooth as I would have liked, but the effect of the flicked liner meeting the blue gives a really nice contrast of colours. And there you have it, super quick glittery eye look

What are your favourite festival faces?

This exxxtremely lovely lipstick will be making an appearance later in the week, in association with the second instalment of my Disney Villain posts. I have been after a purple lipstick for a good few months now, always finding pastel lilacs which I cannot pull off with my skin tone at all. I've learnt the hard way (so many bad decisions and consequently very bad photos!) that I suit darker lipsticks more, which I really embrace now. Gotta love the vampy look! The Kate Moss 107 lipstick from Rimmel is my ultimate favourite but this little gem is fast fighting its way to the top.

Sleek Make Up is a brand I hadn't previously used or bought, but after browsing almost every other brand in store, decided that Sleek's range of dark, vampy, purple lipsticks was the best. It's easy to apply, the colour is long lasting and though like most dark lipsticks it does stain your lips a tad, it's not impossible to remove with face wipes or cleanser. It's another colour that I'm sure can straddle the summer months as well as the winter, and adds just a pop of colour to my often dark ensembles.

What other lipstick colours are you loving at the moment?

I am so excited! As an animal lover and fancy dress fiend, the thought of having a safari themed evening next Wednesday is almost as good as Christmas!

After a lot of deliberation I opted to go as a zebra. I've been a leopard a couple of times before and though I briefly considered being a gazelle (I kid you not) I decided that a zebra was a little bit easier to do. Or so I thought.. how do you dress up as a Zebra whilst trying to still look a little bit cool..? Animal print was a massive part of A/W last year so I thought I'd try my luck on my fave fashion sites to see what was on offer. Being a typical student however, I of course plumped straight for eBay and got myself a cheap pair of zebra print leggings. I'm planning to wear them with a plain black strappy vest top and adorn my self with zebra print material in my hair and on my arms.

What I'm looking forward to more than anything however is trying to create some form of zebra style make up for my face. As I tend to sometimes have adverse reactions to face paint, I'm trying to make do with different types of make up I already own. Cheap and much less likely to bring me out in a rash! My plan is to use a mixture of my No. 7 Sheer Shine Eye Crème and my white ColorTrend eye pencil as the base.

I'll then use a mixture of different kohl and liquid black eyeliners to create the stripe effect. Simple to do on my hand...

.. but I have yet to try my face! Attempt number 1 used black eye shadow whilst attempt number 2 used liquid eyeliner. I think for my face I'm definitely going to use the liquid eyeliner more and if I have the time (and the patience!) to add some make up to my arms or shoulders, I'll probably use the black eye shadow more as that doesn't need to stand out as much.

I now have a week to practice and perfect it - wish me luck!

So I'm a little late in joining the hype (as always) but in the January sales I finally caved in and bought myself a BB cream.

I have to admit I'm a bit lazy with my face. Not that I can really afford to be, with my incredibly oversized features (I kid you not, they're MASSIVE). Ears, mouth, forehead - I got it all. Regardless, I'm pretty bad at wearing foundation all that often. I do moisturise every day but I tend to only wear foundation if I'm going on a night out. Tut, tut.

It's not surprise therefore that what I love most about this BB cream is that I can still be pretty lazy. I still don't wear it everyday but I certainly wear it much more than my foundation. It's so easy to slap on in the mornings and seems to be lasting me a decent amount of time. I'm not sure if it actually gives me a "natural glow" (I tend to avoid reflective surfaces, which is difficult when you're a dancer) but I do feel it grants me an enhanced state of evenness that my face simply refuses to create without a great deal of assistance.

I decided - with much assistance from my mum - to opt for the dark shade. It doesn't match my skin tone completely (things rarely do) but it does a seamless enough job so I'm happy with it. And since I don't have to alter my early morning make up ritual by more than a couple of minutes, my BB cream really is my little baby.

So I finally went shopping for the first time since I've been back home from uni and I definitely picked the right day to go - sales galore! I picked up a few nice things from New Look and Top Shop and there was a fair amount I liked in Zara and H&M too, but until I get any work under my belt, I (painfully) resisted spending too much money. Oh the woes of student life. Anyway, back to the sales..

New Look purchases.
Crop top - £3
Shorts - £7
There were loads of these shorts in the sale, in loads of colours but hardly any in my size - they were all size 6, 14 or 16! Managed to find this cheeky pink size 10 pair though so it wasn't all bad.

Top Shop purchases
Blouse - £10
Ear Cuff - £2.50
Knickers - £2
Bra - £7

Technically not sale items haha!

Anyone splurged this week(end) too? Please don't make me feel guilty!
