Plenty of Parentheses

The festivities are my favourite time of year; that much is never in doubt. But instead of sticking up a tree and coating it in tinsel, I thought I would strip Christmas back a bit. I am quite (read: extremely) partial to fairy lights, so Christmas just provides me with even more reason to deck my walls with glowing globules of festive fun. Result. But I didn't want to stop there. I have restricted most of my decorating to one corner of the room, so that functional living can continue (and more importantly, most of my budget is being saved for Christmassy activities instead. Somerset House, I'm coming for ya.)

So, it's all a little understated at the moment, granted. But it's quaint and quirky, and really that's the kind of style I always aim to emulate. I'm still going to try and squeeze a little tree in somewhere but until I do, my mum bought me the cutest little light up snow globe from Tiger which currently has pride of place on my desk.

Happy festivities, people.

My usual, trustworthy types of post have well and truly failed me this week. Or rather, I've failed them - depends how you look at it! I haven't painted my nails all week and I've lived in outfits I definitely don't want people seeing! In short, I've been a bit of a bad blogger. (Sorry!)

What I have been doing in between uni work is browsing for quaint little things to decorate my uni room with. The spaces which I live in are very much an extension of me and I like to have active walls and shelves covered with all sorts, especially when I'm at uni and feeling a little bit homesick. I think it's nice to have a few home comforts and nothing makes me feel more at home than my interest in ballet. I've mentioned before that I dance at uni and that my parents are both professional dancers-turned-teachers, so dance does make me a feel a bit more at home. This is a bonus really because dance, ballet in particular, has really hit the high street of late. I already own a cacophony of ballet related paraphernalia but I've still managed to spot a few more I'd love to add to my collection!

1. Wall Sticker Silhouettes / Next
2. Classique Ballerina Figure / Dunelm Mill
3. Ballerina Ornament / via Amazon
4. Ballerina Minnie Mouse / H. Samuel
5. Crystal Ballerina / via Amazon
6. Grey Ballet Canvas / BHS

I love both number two and three - I think the chrome finish for number three is really beautiful and I like that all of these can be bought for pretty much anyone of any age. The wall stickers would be great for a children's room and the Minnie Mouse one is perfect for any fan of dance and Disney!

Like I mentioned earlier, I already own quite a few ballet related items thanks to numerous birthday and Christmas presents over time. Since I enjoyed researching this post so much, I figured I'd include some of my own ornaments which I would love to say I had to dig around for but the truth is, all of them are currently on show in my bedroom at home. Doesn't say much for my non-girly protests, does it!

These a just a few of my favourites and I have a great fondness for all the ornaments I've collected over the years, perhaps none more so that the ballet shoe endorsed door sign. I know, I know, it's pink with smiley faces on it - everything I claim to dislike! But it was on my bedroom door for as long as I can remember and when we moved house in December, the sign somehow got forgotten and was left behind. It was still term time at uni when we moved so I didn't realise until a while after we moved that my door sign hadn't moved with us! Thankfully we were able to get it back eventually and though I no longer have it on my bedroom door, it does have pride of place on my bookshelf.

I know this post probably won't appeal to a whole host of people, but I love dance and I loved researching and writing this post - it was a perfect break from reading literary criticism!

If any of you live in halls of residence or college dorms, you'll know how plain four white walls can really look and for some people, that's just fine. A flatmate of mine had his timetable up and that was it.

I am not one of those people. My uni room has always been full of photos, posters, motivational quotes and torn up magazines (though sadly when exam time calls, revision notes too.) Not only is it a great inspiration to have visual reminders and memories to help gaze the day away, it's also a great talking point for anyone coming in to visit!

We're trying to sell out house at the moment though so I've been pretty reluctant to plaster my walls with pictures and posters but if you've read my last couple of posts, you'll know how inspired I've been by the Olympics ... and now it's spread to my walls!

My new features!
To prove that my room isn't just a Jess Ennis shrine (it isn't, it really isn't!) and to take my new camera for a spin I thought I'd show a few of my other wall decorations.

The skateboard is my dad's from when he was younger
and the poster used to be my mum's. Very vintage!

I don't know if you're getting an arty vibe but I adore
dance, plays and musicals (probably too much)

I absolutely love my room the way it is at the moment but I love decorating a new room too so that's why it's perfect for me to have a room at home and a room at uni - best of both worlds! Now I'm a little ashamed to say I spend a fair amount of time browsing the web for new room ideas before I go to uni and here are a few that I think I'm going to use as inspiration for when I head back in September:

(x)
I love, love, love fairy lights and I have a lot both in my room at home and when I'm away at uni. Not only because I'm still a little bit scared of the dark (embarrassing, I know!) but because they give a perfect ambiance for early evening or if you're watching a film with friends.

(x)
Now I've often had little bits of text on my walls and posters with quotes on them but after a lot of browsing, letter cut-outs seem to be the in thing - music lyrics, famous quotes or just words to live by, whatever takes your fancy. I'm currently in the process of writing down all my favourite lyrics, quotes from books and lines from plays to eventually narrow it down to what I want to put on my wall. It's harder than I thought!

When I head back to uni and decorate my new room, I'll update my blog with what I decided to do for decorations.

So is anyone else an avid decorator? What wall wonders do you all have?
