Emmys 2014 Round Up Part 1
It was worth the wait. Here in the UK the highlights of the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards aired at 9pm on Sky Living. And of course having a younger brother meant football took prime time priority so I had to wait even later to watch the awards I've hugely anticipated.
The Emmys showcase the life I hope to emulate. I don't mean the fancy frocks and the celebrity status and all of that which goes with it - I mean the recognition for and working on such vastly inspirational artistic and creative work. It is my hope, my dream and my desire to write for TV and I am determined not to let anything prevent me from doing so. But until that day arrives, should I work hard enough for it, I am more than content to pick out some truly fabulous fashion ensembles and celebrate some of the greatest moments in TV this year.
In a way it's quite hard to judge many of these awards because the UK, bless it's little binge-drinking socks, cannot always keep up with America. Seasons that have finished in the US are still half way through airing here but one doesn't always need to see an ending to know when good TV is great. And boy was there some great TV delivered to us this year.
All the awards were well deserved but the two I am perhaps most pleased about are those won by Jim Parsons (Lead Actor in a Comedy Series) and Uzo Aduba (Guest Actress in a Comedy Series). Jim Parsons seems to be the most genuine of actors and his acceptance speech was, for me, one the most well-delivered, poignant pieces I've heard on an awards show. As for Uzo, her work speaks for itself. She is an incredible talent and it is no secret that I have become a huge fan of Orange is the New Black. I am sad to see that OITNB didn't win more awards but it's a baby compared to these huge American shows and I am sure that it will continue to reap success in the future. And who said success is all about shiny statues anyway? OITNB has broken so many more important barriers and that is a testament to the changing times of the 21st century.
What has not changed is the pure domination of Breaking Bad. Seeing a show be so successful and yet seem so humble is contagious and so many of the acceptance speeches - by Breaking Bad alumni and other winners like - were touching to hear. The most touching section though was, unsurprisingly, In Memoriam. Robin Williams's recent passing was handled in such a thoughtful manner and it is with sadness that I was reminded of the great losses of Philip Seymour Hoffman and James Avery.
Modern Family was again incredibly successful and as a Brit I was impressed to see Steven Moffat's work on Sherlock recognised and rewarded. And after becoming absolutely hooked on Orphan Black thanks the Netflix streaming the first season, it does astound me that Tatiana Maslany was not even nominated, but she would have faced tough competition in what I think was probably the fiercest category. Overall though, I think the Emmy awards were greatly deserved and definitely worth waiting a whole day for!
In part two of my Emmys round up, find out my best dressed and most dapper!
